Elderly and Disabled Housing
Our Elderly and Disabled Housing Office, located at 19 Chapel St, offers housing assistance to low-income older adults through affordable housing or rental assistance. We provide assistance to a majority of older renters who have excessive housing costs, and offer low-income elderly the benefits of service-enriched options to live independently.
Affordable Public Housing for Families
Our Family Public Housing Office, located at 1 Park Holm, specializes in providing affordable, decent, and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, older adults, and persons with disabilities. Tenants typically pay no more than 30% of their monthly income for rent. Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals. We determine eligibility based on: 1) annual gross income; 2) status: age 62+, a person with a disability, or as a family; and, 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.
Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)
Our Housing Choice Voucher Office, located at 120B Hillside Ave, focuses on connecting people in need with available private housing in the area. Private housing subsidization makes it possible to find housing quickly when the wait list for public housing is long. These properties are owned privately and you are required to apply through the landlord or housing complex to be accepted with a reduced rate. HUD’s low-rent apartment search tool is helpful when looking for available properties. Your monthly rent may be based on income (typically no more than 30% of your monthly income) or it may be a flat fee.
Recreation
At the Florence Gray Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County provide supervised recreational activities for youths and other members of the community.
Virtual Learning Center
At our Virtual Learning Center, located at the Florence Gray Center, we offer a large computer lab with internet access and printers available Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
